Fresh off of his birthday set at #AfterLife this past Saturday, Ghostmachines is int the Artist Spotlight this week. Ghostmachines has played alongside many huge acts including Midnight Conspiracy, Zeds Dead, Destructo, Flux Pavillion and many more. He’s also played at numerous notable venues in Chicago. Check out his interview below.

How did you first begin DJing/Producing?

My dad installed a really early version of reason on this old bubble iMac we had in the basement when I was younger, and I started making really strange atmospheric DnB stuff, I blame Aphex Twin. I found out my friend Henry was making stuff too on the time, on like garage band or something. We kinda molded together some stuff and formed Compact Disco.

Who is your biggest influence(s)?

Justice Daft Punk Richie Hawtin Stuart Price Boys Noize SebastiAn Squarepusher Siriusmo Bloody Beetroots Sven Väth Aphex Twin Bontan Gesaffelstein Justin Martin Bonobo Kavinsky Gorgon City Tiga

What’s your favorite record of all time?

† – Justice

What was your favorite party of all time that you have played?

Girls + Boys @ House of Blues

Who do you want to collaborate with in the future?

Billy Kenny + Abby Jane, Djedjotronic, Tracques, Sonny Fodera. I know that’s a strange combination of folks but they’re all doing very tight things right now and one of them (Tracques) has been around for a very long time and he deserves a lot of credit for his wide body of work.

What’s the most embarrassing thing thats happened to you at a show?

Every time anything ever unplugs from anything at any time of the night ever

What do you like to do when you’re not working on music/DJing?

I go to school for Interactive Design at Columbia College, I like hanging out with dogs, and I run it at FIFA and out on the field. More so in Fifa though.

What is your opinion on the current EDM scene?

There’s a lot of talent and theres also a lot of really bad things. I recommend anyone no matter what they listen to maintain a steady diet of house and techno and visit Detroit and Chicago at least once a year and everything will be ok

What do you think will be the next big thing in EDM?

Minimal becoming mainstream, 14 year olds with MINUS t-shirts going to movement

What do you think about all these “frauds” in the EDM scene using ghost producers, buying likes and purchasing their own tracks on Beatport?

Those who know/care will disregard them, and they’ll be a sidenote in the great story of music.

Is there any upcoming releases/shows we should keep an eye out for?

GHOSTMACHINES is my primary outfit and we’re gearing up for an EP release. I’m launching a side project pretty soon for the smoother side of things. Stay tuned folks.
