PHNM is in the Artist Spotlight this week. This Chicago native has been making some serious waves lately. He has toured throughout the midwest and has hit both coasts taking his show on the road for crowds extremely pleased with his intertwining of genres. PHNM has also played alongside internationally known artist such as Dillon Francis, A-Track, and Wolfgang Gartner to name a few. We got the chance to talk with PHNM, check out his interview below and take a listen to some of his latest tunes.
How did you first begin DJing/Producing?
I was originally going to a lot of parties in college where the music was horrible. People were always fighting over what to listen to and no one would let a song play for more than 30 seconds without someone changing it. I decided I wanted to be in control of the music and started playing a bunch of shit people had never heard. I asked some friends who were djs at the time to teach me and slowly but surely I learned. Production wise, I just started tinkering with sounds on fruity loops in high school. I’ve never really put out much music until these last 2-3 years because I’m overly picky about the final product. There isn’t enough quality control in dance music in general these days so I like to take my time.
Who is your biggest influence(s)?
The change every week. I’m a big fan of Prince as well as Hudson Mohawke. More recently I cant stop listening to everything from Eric Dingus and Im constantly relistening to the Been Trill – In The Field mixes. Perfection
What’s your favorite record of all time?
Probably Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix or Purple Rain from Prince.
What was your favorite party of all time that you have played?
Does Spring Awakening this year count? I’ll say that.
Who do you want to collaborate with in the future?
Lunice, Flosstradamus, SNBRN, Gucci Mane
What’s the most embarrassing thing thats happened to you at a show?
I tossed out a PHNM shirt into the crowd and it was such a poor throw it landed in front of the barricade to the crowd so security had to throw it again. Awkward.
What do you like to do when you’re not working on music/DJing?
Watch videos of Gucci Mane on Youtube
What is your opinion on the current EDM scene?
When i’m not djing I don’t really listen to dance music too closely outside of feel good house jams. I think I would be burnt out if so, so I don’t really have any opinion on edm. I do have an opinion on the new Kanye album though, it will be the record of the year once it comes out. No I haven’t heard it yet either.
What do you think will be the next big thing in EDM?
Anything Main Course puts out. this whole “Jungle Terror” sound is so tight right now. I’m definitely making music with more world inspired sounds. Big ups to everyone at Main Course.
What do you think about all these “frauds” in the EDM scene using ghost producers, buying likes and purchasing their own tracks on Beatport?
Dickheads.
Is there any upcoming releases/shows we should keep an eye out for?
This new project from Zebo and I is going to be amazing once the app finally launches. I need to release this Missy Elliot remix I’ve been sitting on too, along with this new original called The Executioner.
