You probably know DJ Nurotic from 103.5 Kiss Fm, but what you may not know is that this guy is so much more than just another radio DJ. He has preformed in all different parts of the country including Florida, Nevada, Iowa, New York and many more. Nurotic also produces his own music. Recently he did a remix of Diplo’s “Revolution” which Diplo played live at Spring Awakening Music Festival back in June. Diplo also did a guest mix on Nurotic’s latest mix tape, #HourOfDopeness Volume 3. Read the interview we did with Nurotic below.
What made you want to start DJing/producing?
I saw a DJ mix at my cousin’s birthday party when I was 12. I was amazed by what he was doing. I saw the DJ as an artist, and I wanted to do that. As far as producing, I was a big fan of Juke music, and I started making some tracks to fit my style of mixing.
Who is your biggest influence(s)?
DJ Rashad was a big influence on me. He was one of the few people to actually sit down and show me how to produce. Besides him, I always watched Jazzy Jeff, A-Trak, and DJ AM videos to learn how to better myself as a DJ.
Whats you’re favorite record of all time?
This is damn near impossible to answer. I listen to too many genres to list one as a favorite.
What is your favorite party in Chicago?
Can I list one of my events as my favorite party? The party I do every other Sunday at Skores with my brother, DJ Nick Nino, is one of my favorites because we have full control of what we play. We get to play any style of house we feel like for 4 hours.
Who do you want to collaborate with?
After seeing them live in concert, Disclosure. They are amazing musicians and I know that I can learn so much by working with them.
What’s the most embarrassing thing thats happened to you at a show?
I was doing the Top 8 at 8 LIVE on 103.5 Kiss FM, and I don’t know if it was a bad wire, a corrupted file, but my laptop stopped while I was in the middle of my set. There’s already a lot of pressure mixing live on the air, but having your music stop, is something out of a nightmare.
What do you like to do when you’re not working on music/DJing?
Doing random activities with my family is always fun. Mini-golf, movies, arcades. I think I had a kid so I can relive my childhood. Ha ha ha
What is your opinion on the current EDM scene?
I think the EDM scene is looking good. Besides festivals still being huge and selling out, EDM acts are doing solo tours and selling out arenas.
What do you think will be the next big thing in EDM?
Rap in EDM seems to be the new wave. Waka, Travis Porter, and Migos are doing tracks with EDM producers and they sound good. I wouldn’t mind hearing some more of that.
Is there any upcoming releases/shows we should keep an eye out for?
I just dropped #HourOfDopeness Vol. 3 with Diplo. I’m also working on an EP with my group, Dope-O Locos. As far as shows, I’m always posting on Facebook where I’m playing every weekend.
