Exclusive Interview: Nick Dubbz

This week in the Artist Spotlight we have Nick Dubbz from Portland. Nick is a resident DJ at Mad House Monday’s and plays many shows in Portland, Seattle and other parts of the Northwest. We had a chance to ask him a few questions. Read the interview below.
What made you want to start DJing/producing?
I started DJing in early 2000.  A friend and I bought some belt drive Numark turntables and were just determined to learn how to beatmatch, and after a few months a mutual friend, Ernest Ryan aka DJ Wiggles (who has been a mainstay in the Portland electronic music community since the late 90’s) took us under his wing.  A couple years later another friend, Justin Burke aka DeeJay 3Peace, really tought me to dive into the beat and helped me to find my own sound.  Ive been playing music ever since.  As a DJ I always wanted to play my own music, so a couple years ago I began producing mashups and remixes.
Who is your biggest influence(s)?
I have to say DJ Dan, Donald Glaude, Hatiras, DJ Fixx, Keith Mac, and Mike Balance.
Whats you’re favorite record of all time?
My white label of Static Revenger feat. Boston- Long Time
What is your favorite party in Portland?
Donald Glaude, Cobalt Lounge, Fat Tuesday 2002, or Rabbit In The Moon, Halloween 2007
Who do you want to collaborate with?
You read my list of influences right? Honestly, I’ll collab with anyone.  Great things come from people working together and thinking outside the box.
What’s the most embarrassing thing thats happened to you at a show?
I’m not naming any names lol, but a while back i was opening for a headliner, and had played one of my favorite tracks at the time(Push Up by The Freestylers) and was dancing around next to him and as he was mixing out of it and bumped the tables and skipped the needle.  I was absolutely horrified!!  He was totally cool though and very gracious though(thank god)
What do you like to do when you’re not working on music/DJing?
I’m a stay at home dad, which is a full time job:)
What is your opinion on the current EDM scene?
I think EDM is a term used to describe current electronic music.  Dance music is an ever changing thing.  Theres so much good music and great talent out there I think that the sky is the limit.
What do you think will be the next big thing in EDM?
Melvin & Klein
Is there any upcoming releases/shows we should keep an eye out for?
Im super excited to be opening for the one and only Green Velvet in a couple months.  I also have some original tunes I’ve been working on I hope to get released soon, and a bunch of mashups and remixes on my sound cloud at https://www.soundcloud.com/nick-dubbz
