Exclusive Interview: Orville Kline

Orville Kline is a well known Chicago based Dj & producer. He is a resident Dj at Porn And Chicken, the hottest Monday night party in Chicago, and has also played at festivals such as Spring Awakening and EDC Las Vegas. As a producer, Orville has had chart breaking releases on Beatport. We got a chance to talk to him, read what he had to say:

What made you want to start DJing/producing?
I have been doing music almost my entire life.  It all started when I picked up the saxophone in the 4th grade.  From then on, I was playing instruments and writing music in bands doing the whole rock and roll thing.  I did my first DJ gig when I was 15 at my parents bar for a NYE party.  Over time, I gradually shifted my focus from live music to just electronic music and DJing.

Who is your biggest influence(s)?
One of my biggest influences as a DJ is probably Felix Da Housecat.  His 2004 album Devin Dazzle & The Neon Fever was one of the biggest albums of the electroclash wave that broke out about 10 years ago. It really helped me to bridge the gap between rock and house.   He was the first DJ I really started following and appreciating.  He has always had an eclectic and diverse style which has definitely influenced my DJing.

Whats you’re favorite record of all time?

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon.

What was your favorite party of all time that you have played?
Within a year’s time I got to play at EDC Vegas, Ultra Miami, Spring Awakening and NCF.  It’s really hard to compare a festival set with just a “party” but a festival is just an extremely large party.  With that being said, my favorite “festival” of all I played is probably the main stage set with Porn And Chicken at Spring Awakening last summer.  My favorite non-festival party I’ve ever played is definitely Porn And Chicken which I get to play every single Monday lol.

Who is your favorite artist to collaborate with?
My favorite artist to collaborate with has been Justin Tranter of Semi Precious Weapons.  We initially did a remix for Semi Precious Weapons which led to us being fortunate enough to write and an original with him featuring his amazing vocals.  You can hear it on Porn And Chicken’s “Let It Bleed.”

Who do you want to collaborate with in the future?

I would really love to collaborate on a track with Trent Reznor.  It’s quite a long shot but stranger things have happened.

What’s the most embarrassing thing thats happened to you at a show?
Pretty much every thing that could go wrong has gone wrong to me.  The most embarrassing thing though was probably being too drunk to play and accidentally playing the same song a few times in a row while wearing these giant 8inch tall platform boots, face paint and shoulder pads for a party monster themed event.  Don’t drink and DJ kids.

What do you like to do when you’re not working on music/DJing?
If I’m not working on music or DJing, you could probably find me reading books on quantum mechanics or cruising around the city on my custom built Harley.

What is your opinion on the current EDM scene?
I think the current EDM scene is awesome.  Some people hate on the fact that it is more popular now then it has ever been but that happens to anything that ever gets popular.  There have never been more opportunities to go out and play and more people that are interested in hearing this kind of music.  There is also more competition but it makes the entire scene stronger.

What do you think will be the next big thing in EDM?
Vaporwave.

What do you think about all these “frauds” in the EDM scene using ghost producers, buying likes and purchasing their own tracks on Beatport?
I think buying your way to success really sucks but it is a reality that we are all surrounded with.  With enough cash, you can pay someone to make your music, buy Facebook likes, twitter followers, soundcloud plays, and buys on beatport so you chart so that you appear to the general public that you are respectful and popular as a DJ/producer.  It’s also not that unfeasible to buy your way into djing slots at clubs and festivals.  The unfortunate truth is that perception is reality and many people take advantage of that.

Is there any upcoming releases/shows we should keep an eye out for?
We are BARE guest DJing with me at Porn And Chicken this Monday, you can catch Porn And Chicken on the main stage at Spring Awakening fest on Sunday, June 15th, and I will also be doing some shows with Kryoman in Cannes, France at the end of June.
