Exclusive Interview: Joel Fletcher

Joel Fletcher will be playing in Chicago this Monday, April 21, 2014 at Lincoln Hall. This event begins at 8pm and is open to people who are 18+. Joel is one of the pioneers of the latest sound in EDM, Melbourne Bounce. He was one of the direct supporters on Avicii’s True tour in Australia earlier this year. Fletcher’s remix of Swing by Savage, went double platinum and was ranked number 1 in the ARIA music charts. He was also on the Stereosonic line up where he played the “highlight set of his dj career.”

We talked to Fletcher and here’s what he had to say:

What made you want to start DJing/producing?
I first got inspired to start djing from a couple of friends of mine that went by the name of Electro Rockerz – they played at all the local house party’s that I use to go to and they were amazing. So I got my hands on a pair of decks and thought I’d give it a shot, and It quickly turned into a crazy passion.

 

Who is your biggest influence(s)?
Chuckie has been a big inspiration since the get go. I love the way he goes about it, and obviously his tune’s are wicked. Deorro is another huge inspiration to me, I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with him on a couple of occasions which was a highlight for me. He blows me away with everything he makes. GENUIS!

What’s your favorite record of all time? 

Limp Bizkit – Rollin

 

 

What was your favorite party of all time that you have played?

Will Sparks and I played a VS set at Stereosonic on the main stage in our home town Melbourne, that’s been the highlight set for me in my career of djing!

 

Who is your favorite artist to collaborate with?
I’d have to say Will, we work really well together the sessions always run smoothly and always have a good time working with him.

 

Who do you want to collaborate with in the future?
I’d love to collaborate with Chuckie as he’s been an idol of mine for many years. I would also love to collaborate with Showtek – their sound is crazy and they’re pumping out some of my favourite records at the moment!

 

What’s the most embarrassing thing thats happened to you at a show?
A fan came up to me to say hello and get a photo at my san diego show, and I went to give her a kiss on the cheek but she just stood there and thought I was trying to talk to her and left me hanging in front of everyone. I was pretty embarrassed lol.

 

What do you like to do when you’re not working on music/DJing?
I like to hang with friends/family when I’m not on the road/making music. That’s the most important thing to me other than music.

 

What is your opinion on the current EDM scene?
I think fan base wise it’s better than ever. There’s more support out there for the artists than I have ever seen, it’s crazy! Sound wise, I think when you listen over the top 100 on Beatport majority of it is the same vibes. It would be cool for a new trend/sound to come through sometime soon.

 

What do you think will be the next big thing in EDM?
MELBOURNE BOUNCE!!!

 

What do you think about all these “frauds” in the EDM scene using ghost producers, buying likes and purchasing their own tracks on Beatport?
I’m not for it at all. It doesn’t prove them as artists – they are simply getting a name for them selves off someone else’s work. Not cool.

 

Is there any upcoming releases/shows we should keep an eye out for?
I have a new single coming with a very talented singer named Bobby Andonov so keep an ear out for that one! I also have a new collaboration with Will Sparks which I’m super excited about. I have a remix for Disclosure (Latch) .. I’m unsure of a release date on that one yet but I can’t wait for it! Also plenty of other original stuff in the works
